Trump taps conservative podcaster Dan Bongino to be deputy FBI director

President Donald Trump has appointed conservative commentator and former Secret Service agent Dan Bongino as the deputy director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). This unprecedented move marks the first time in the agency’s 117-year history that the second-in-command position is filled by a political appointee rather than a career agent.

Bongino, 50, brings a diverse background to the role. He began his career with the New York City Police Department (NYPD) before serving in the U.S. Secret Service, where he protected Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Transitioning to media, Bongino became a prominent conservative voice, hosting “Unfiltered” on Fox News until 2023 and later “The Dan Bongino Show” podcast. With his new appointment, he plans to conclude his podcast to focus on his responsibilities within the FBI.

The selection of Bongino has elicited mixed reactions. Supporters, including President Trump, praise his dedication and assert that his leadership will bring a fresh perspective to the bureau. However, concerns have been raised within the FBI and among political observers about appointing a political figure to such a high-ranking position traditionally held by nonpartisan professionals. Notably, new FBI Director Kash Patel had previously indicated that the deputy role would be filled by someone with extensive bureau experience, leading to apprehension about potential shifts in the agency’s direction.
